This month proprietor of The Clinic on Belfast’s Lisburn Road, Jackie Donnelly, discusses how to counteract the negative effects of over-exposure to the sun.
As the summer season draws to a close, and the tan from a fortnight in Spain starts to fade, the tell-tale signs of time spent basking in the summer sun and swimming in chlorine will start to show the skin.
Even with the faithful application of sun cream in the summer, your skin may still have been exposed to negative effects of the summer sun. Exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun accounts for 90 percent of premature skin aging and can cause dry, leathery skin, wrinkles and fine lines. Sun damage also causes pigmentary changes such as age spots, uneven skin tone, spider veins and dilated capillaries.
August/September is always a busy time of year for me with clients requesting treatments which will effectively reverse the negative effects of sun damage. At The Clinic I use two product ranges in my skincare treatments which are clinically proven to reduce the signs of ageing; Agera® Rx and Epionce®. Both have been scientifically proven to penetrate and stimulate the skin for rapid, visible results and I can really see the effects on my own clients.
One of the most popular treatments at The Clinic would be a skin peel which uses acids to remove dry, flaky skin, even out tone and reduce pore size. These revolutionary proliferative peels are non-irritating, pain free and cause no side effects such as skin shedding, redness or irritation. Skin peels are also beneficial for combating thickening or “leathery” skin caused by excessive UV exposure.
Another option for sun damaged skin would be Medical Microdermabrasion which is essentially a deep-exfoliating procedure using tiny crystals to remove dead surface cells left behind from over exposure to the sun and chlorine. In addition to repairing sun damage, microdermabrasion also fights against fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged, oily pores and acne scarring. The result is a glowing, smooth, even and bright complexion and many clients see a difference after just one treatment. Celebrity fans of microdermabrasion include Elle Macpherson and Jennifer Aniston who, in their forties, have the beautifully bronzed look down to a fine art.
Agera® Rx and Epionce® both offer advanced aftercare products which can enhance the effects of the treatments between sessions.
At The Clinic I offer a free consultation to help you decide on the best choices for improving your particular skin type and condition and am always on hand to discuss any queries you may have. All procedures are administered by a fully qualified nurse practitioner who will discuss your skin concerns and help to formulate a skin care schedule.
